The Berkshires
New Theatre Festival

Salt Tree Art will host the first Berkshires NEW Theater Festival (The Berkshires NEWT) on Saturday, July 4, 2026, bringing together artists, audiences, and creative communities for a day of original performance in the Berkshires. Led by Artistic Director Chris Browne Valenzuela, the festival features artists from five continents working across theater, movement, dance, puppetry, and music. The program brings together both emerging and established artists whose work explores the relationship between people, place, culture, and the natural world. For additional details on attending this year’s festival, please RSVP:

Concept

The Berkshires NEWT grows from Salt Tree Art’s commitment to creating spaces where artistic practice, ecological awareness, and community engagement intersect. Set within the cultural and natural landscape of the Berkshires, the festival invites artists from around the world into conversation with one another, with local audiences, and with the environment that surrounds them.

This year’s inaugural program explores stories of land, migration, memory, identity, and belonging. Drawing from a wide range of theatrical traditions and contemporary performance practices, participating artists will present original work that crosses disciplines, experiments with form, and offers distinct cultural perspectives.

Taking place on the 250th anniversary of American independence, The Berkshires NEWT will celebrate the exchange of ideas, stories, and artistic practices that continue to shape American culture. By bringing together artists with varied backgrounds, perspectives, and creative disciplines, the festival aims to establish a new platform for bold performance and international artistic dialogue in the Berkshires.

Anissa Naji is a Moroccan-German actress, comedian, writer, singer and musician fluent in English, German, French, Spanish, and Arabic. A graduate of Circle in the Square Theatre School in New York City, she now works as an actress based in NYC. Her work bridges cultures and languages, blending comedy, music, and storytelling.

Brian Soliwoda is an environmental artist, puppeteer, actor, and performer, and a co-founder of Salt Tree Art. His multidisciplinary work has been supported through grants from Burning Man Global Art and the Queens Council on the Arts, and he has served as an artist-in-residence for LaGuardia Airport. His installations and performances have been presented at venues including the Central Park Arsenal, Plexal Gallery, and Socrates Sculpture Park. A member of the Puppeteers of America, SAG-AFTRA, and Actors’ Equity Association, Brian brings together visual art, storytelling, and live performance in work that is both imaginative and deeply rooted in place. Beyond his artistic practice, he is a frequent host of burlesque, circus, cabaret, and variety shows with Cat’s Eye and the creative community that gathers around Jen’s garage.

Cherie Chalouhi is a singer, songwriter, event planner, tv and film dabbler, time waster, dance round my roomer, giggler and snacker. Born and raised in Qatar. Happily nestled in Brooklyn. Album “Take My Time” on anywhere you stream.

Chris Browne Valenzuela is an award-winning Chilean actor, playwright and educator based in New York City. His original work has been presented in many theaters throughout the city, including A.R.T./New York Theatres’ mainstage, Dixon Place and The Center. His original play “#daddy” earned The Hispanic Federation’s 2025 FuerzaFest award for “Best Play.” As an actor, he’s led numerous productions in both American and Chilean theatres, including The Puerto Rican Traveling Theater, Mill Mountain Theatre, INTAR, IATI, JACK, Teatro Mori, and others, as well as being a company member of Teatro Sea.

Eliot Madrid, originally from California and now residing in New York City, is a multifaceted artist with a passion for creative exploration. His first art form was music, with the trumpet as his primary instrument, an experience that sparked a curiosity and drive to learn more. This hunger for growth has led him to perform in short films, musicals, plays, poetry readings, pit orchestras, chamber groups, and rock bands, in addition to some work as a session musician and music consultant. His music draws heavily from personal reflection, turning intimate journal entries into expressive songs and poetry. When not making music, Eliot works as a manager at the renowned prop house, Acme Props. He also enjoys furthering his artistic skills through classes in metalwork, flameworking, and sewing.

Jen Jurek is the owner  of Hallett‘s Cove Theatre in Astoria, a Astoria based LLC that collaborates with local artists and produces original shows/characters for various venues and works in NYC. The LLC is also a host and home for Astoria Women’s  Improv (10 years and counting), where Jen is currently teaching local women of all walks and paths the joy of improv. Jen is a Spolin educator and children’s theater director, and has been the Head Theater Director in Long Island’s Music Academy Foundation for the past 4 years. When Jen is not imagining creepy puppets and singing in a professional choir, Jen is a very proud mom of Ripley Enna. This human being  radiates humor, kindness and excitement and makes making anything that much more wonderful.

Sancho Alcina is a bilingual actor from Madrid, trained at La Manada and Circle in the Square Theatre School. New York credits include “Macbeth,” “Blue Moon,” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” with additional work internationally in “The House of Bernarda Alba” and “Julius Caesar”. Sancho is grateful to his dear friends Carlos and Sofia, and to his sister and mother for teaching him what it means to be human.

Sasha Novich is a New York-based actor and singer. His most recent recent work includes productions such as “Lost Girl” by Kimberly Belflower and “Love and Information” by Caryl Churchill. He is also credited with his portrayals of classic characters like Malvolio in “Twelfth Night.” His curiosity about how circumstances shape behavior fuels his interest in a diverse range of characters he sets to portray.

Yun Gao is a New York-based actor originally from China. She worked in film and tv for years in her native country before her move to New York to explore the theater. She just recently graduated from Circle in the Square Theater School and started working professionally as an actor in America. She loves nature and different cultures around the world, and the connection between these is her reason and purpose for working in the arts.

In Memory of Jane Hollis

NEWT is made possible through support from the Jane Hollis Memorial Fund, established in honor of Jane Hollis, a devoted patron of the performing arts whose enthusiasm, generosity, and encouragement touched countless artists and arts organizations throughout New England’s Shakespeare and performing arts communities.

Jane believed deeply in the power of live performance to bring people together, spark imagination, and build lasting community. Her support helped create opportunities for artists to take risks, grow their craft, and share their work with new audiences.

In celebration of her legacy, Salt Tree Art is proud to present the inaugural Janey Awards, recognizing Outstanding Performance in a Leading Role. Named in her honor, the Janeys celebrate the creativity, dedication, and spirit of performance that Jane championed.

We are grateful for the Jane Hollis Memorial Fund’s supporters in helping bring NEWT to life and in continuing a tradition of uplifting artists and the performing arts for future generations.
